Owls picked to finish third of 14 teams in the preseason coaches poll
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Kristen McCarthy and senior Qwedia Wallace earned Atlantic 10 Preseason Women's Basketball honors, as McCarthy was named to the first team and Wallace garnered third team honors. The Owls were picked to finish third in the conference behind Xavier and Dayton.
McCarthy, an A-10 First Team selection as a sophomore, returns as the Owls' leading scorer averaging 14.8 points per game last season. She was named the Big 5 Player of the Year, and provided one of last year's top highlights in a home win against Charlotte when she scored a program-record 42 points.
Wallace was an All-Big 5 Second Team selection last year and was the team's second-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game. She came up big for the Owls in a number of key wins, particularly late in the season in the team's Atlantic 10 and NCAA Tournament runs.
After capturing its second-straight A-10 Championship and advancing to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Kevin McGuff, Xavier has been tabbed as the team to beat in the A-10 women's basketball race, according to a vote of the league's head coaches. Dayton and Temple, who also made appearances in last year's NCAA Tournament, round out the top three, respectively.
Temple (25-9/11-3), which reached the finals of the A-10 Championship and made its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, earning one of the league's three bids last season, was picked third in the poll. Third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza returns six letterwinners, including three starters, to the line-up this season.
The 2010-11 season tips off on Friday, Nov. 12 when 11 of the A-10's 14 schools are in action. The top 12 teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship, to be held March 4-7 at The Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. First round action of the Championship tips off on Friday, March 4, with the top four teams earning a bye. Quarterfinal play continues on Saturday, March 5, with the Semifinal round on Sunday, March 6 on CBS College Sports. The Championship game will be held on Monday, March 7, and televised live on ESPN2 at 5:00pm ET.
