Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Long Island, 3-1

Owls led by Elyse Burkert with 15 kills and Ariel Pierre with 25 digs

PHILADELPHIA – After dropping a set to start the match, the Temple volleyball rallied to take the next three sets and earn a 3-1 win against visiting Long Island (3-15) on Tuesday night. Elyse Burkert led the Owls (4-13) with 15 kills, while Ariel Pierre was outstanding on defense with 25 digs.
The Owls dropped the first set 25-16, but came back to win by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19.
Ashley Carr notched a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs for Temple, Chelsea Tupuola tallied 13 digs and Rikia Trischuk dished 43 assists.
Most impressive was Temple's blocking, as the Owls recorded a season-high 17 blocks. Gabriella Matautia was responsible for a solo block and eight block assists and Jess Antosz notched a solo block along with seven block assists.
Freshman Cecelia Spencer made an impact with seven kills, zero errors and six blocks.
Temple never found a rhythm in the first set and committed too many errors, allowing the Blackbirds to pull away halfway through.
In the next three sets the Owls out-hit Long Island each time, recording 44 total kills to the Blackbirds' 29 over those three sets.
Temple was most dominant in the final set, taking a lead at 4-3 and leading by an increasing margin throughout.
The Owls will continue their homestand this weekend when they host Dayton and Xavier. Temple will take on league-leading Dayton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8.
