Volleyball Takes Xavier to an Extra Set But Falls 3-1

Owls rally to win the third set but ultimately fall to the Musketeers

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team rallied from a two-set hole to take the third, but could not complete the comeback as the Owls (4-15, 1-4) ultimately fell 3-1 to Xavier (12-6, 5-1). Temple nearly matched Xavier in total kills, but hitting errors proved costly as Xavier won by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-16.
Elyse Burkert knocked down a match-high 15 kills for Temple and made it a double-double with 12 digs. Ariel Pierre averaged over six digs per set, finishing with a team-high 27 digs.
Rikia Trischuk recorded a match-high 41 assists, Gabrielle Matautia tallied 11 kills and Chelsea Tupuola came up with 10 digs.
Xavier had three players record 10 kills apiece, and libero Stephanie Vorherr tallied a match-high 28 digs.
The Musketeers' displayed their best hitting in the first set, but Temple stayed in it. The 11th tie of the set came at 19-19 before Xavier pulled away and later tallied the final two points on aces.
After a tie at 12-12 in the second set, a string of attack errors by Temple allowed the Musketeers to pull away and gain a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The third set saw 14 ties and eight lead changes, and Temple out-hit Xavier .188 to .119. The Owls were down 20-22 before rallying to close out the set on a 5-1 run.
Five service aces in the fourth set helped Xavier keep the Owls from continuing their comeback, and after six early lead changes the Musketeers pulled ahead for good.
Temple will be on the road next weekend for more A-10 matches at Charlotte and George Washington. The Owls will face Charlotte first, at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.
