Mauro, Rams and Rams represent the Owls
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Juniors Filip Rams and Kurt Mauro, and sophomore Kacper Rams represented the Temple men's tennis team at the 2010 MetLife Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, held in Bradenton, Florida on Friday, November 12-Sunday, November 14, 2010. The tournament is the only college clay court event in the country.
Filip Rams was the only Owls player to earn a win in the highly competitive tournament, defeating his opponent Ricky Doverspike from #34 Alabama in two sets, 7-6, 6-4, in the opening round. The team captain then faced Finn Tearney of #21 Pepperdine, the 113th-ranked player in the country, and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Kacper Rams and Mauro both drew tough opponents in the opening round. Rams squared off against 111th-ranked Sekou Bangoura, Jr. of #8 Florida, falling 6-2, 6-1, while Mauro faced Andres Carrasco from the #31 Arizona squad, dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Bangoura and Carrasco went on to play each other in the finals, with Bangoura needing three sets to claim the championship.
Things didn't get much easier for Kacper Rams or Mauro in the consolation draw. Both players faced players from Miami, the 43rd-ranked team in the country. Mauro went up against #96 Carl Sundberg, falling 6-0, 6-0. Kacper Rams gave Omar Aly all he could handle before falling in three-sets, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
The Rams' brother teamed up to play in the doubles bracket. The duo fell to Carlos Taborga and Doverspike of Alabama, 8-6.
The Owls men's tennis team has completed the fall portion of its schedule and will begin play in the spring championship season at the VCU Invite on January 29-30, 2011.
