Men's Soccer Draws Xavier In Opening Round of Atlantic 10 Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
- The bracket for the 2010 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Tournament has been released with the third-seeded Temple men's soccer team (8-8-2, 6-3-0) drawing sixth-seeded Xavier (8-6-3, 5-4-0) in the opening round game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 11 in Charlotte, N.C.  The Owls are making their second trip in three years to the A-10 Tournament, in search of their first ever conference title.

No. 18 Charlotte and La Salle grabbed the top two spots in the tournament, and both recieved first round byes.  St. Bonaventure fell into the fourth seed and will face fifth-seed Saint Louis.

Temple is making its eighth appearance in the conference championship, last qualifying in 2008. The Cherry and White were the second-seed in the 2008 A-10 Championship, falling to Dayton 2-1 in overtime.

This year, the Owls posted a 6-3-0 record in A-10 play and won their last three matches to finish the season third in the conference standings.  The Owls made their run for the conference playoffs with three-straight wins to end the season, including a defeat of then-no. 16 Charlotte.

Xavier topped Temple 2-1 in double overtime this season.  Sophomore Cody Calafiore (5 g, 4 a) netted at the end of regulation to force overtime, with the Musketeers' Brandon Butcher tallying the golden goal in the early-goings of the second overtime.

Calafiore and junior Tyler Witmer ended the season with identical figures in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14).  For his four point effort this past weekend, Witmer was named to the Philadelphia Soccer Six Weekly Honor Roll. Freshman Vaughn Spurrier made his collegiate debut a memorable one, ranking third on the team in goals with four and points with 10.

In goal, redshirt-keeper Bret Mollon (7-8-2) has been solid making 50 saves and boasting six shutouts.  His .90 GAA ranks third all-time for a single season in school history.

#3 Temple and #6 Xavier open the 2010 Atlantic 10 Tournament at 5:30 on November 11.  #4 St. Bonaventure and #5 Saint Louis square off at 8:00 p.m.  The lowest remaining seed after the first round will take on La Salle, while the highest faces Charlotte.  Second round games will be played on November 12 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.  The title game will be held on November 14 at 1:00 p.m.

Single day tickets are available for $6, while a three-day pass may be purchased for $15. Tickets will be available at the entrance to Transamerica Field on the campus of Charlotte.
