Owls look to topple first ranked opponent since February, 2009
Game Notes vs. Duke
PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's basketball will face its second ranked opponent of the season as the Owls travel to #3/3 Duke for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, Dec. 30. Temple is 7-5 after recently having a five-game win streak snapped at Eastern Michigan, while the Blue Devils enter the game undefeated at 12-0.
The Owls' 65-56 loss at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 21 was its first loss of December, and Temple will face a tough test to return to the win column.
Temple has never beaten Duke over five attempts since 1998. The closest of the five meetings was a year ago when the Owls suffered an eight-point, 80-72 defeat in Philadelphia. Last time the teams met in Durham in 2008, Duke won by a score of 87-52. Two of the five meetings have taken place in Durham, and two others were at neutral sites. In the NCAA Second Round in 2007, Temple lost 62-52 to the Blue Devils.
In the Owls' last win, 55-43 at Villanova on Dec. 19, they held the Wildcats scoreless over a 14-minute span that started with five minutes left in the first half. The Owls won back-to-back games on Dec. 1 and Dec. 4 by a combined total of three points, defeating Rutgers 60-58 at home and going on the road to beat Auburn, 62-61.
Junior Shey Peddy reached the 1,000-point mark in her Division I career (including two years at Wright State) in Temple's most recent game, and is now at 1,002 points overall. Temple's victory at Auburn was the 50th career win for third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.
Duke is undefeated this season and is ranked #3 in both polls now after a 46-45 win vs. previously undefeated #4 Xavier on Dec. 21. The Blue Devils are 46-4 in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie's tenure (since 2007-08) and Duke has won its last 14 games vs. A-10 opponents.
