VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Temple women's track team opened the 2010-11 season with a very successful day at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, hosted by Villanova University on Friday evening. Senior Tashima Stephens grabbed her first title of the year in the 500m, while junior Ebony Moore placed first in the weight throw and classmate Alanna Owens won shot put.
Along with that, the Owls' 4x400m relay comprised of three seniors - Stephens, Paris Williams, Shadaya Bennett - and freshman Ambrosia Iwugo nabbed a first place finish and ECAC qualifying marks with a time of 3:52.30.
Stephens owned the 500m in a time of 1:16.93, followed by Bennett who placed second in a time of 1:17.34.
Temple dominated the weight throw, led by Moore's toss of 51-07.75. Owens placed second with a throw of 49-07.25, followed by junior Brittany Weston who landed 42-07.00.
Owens made her presence felt in the shot put, throwing down a first place launch of 41-08.50. Also in the field, sophomore Chelsea Robinson cleared 35-06.50 for fourth in the triple jump.
Also faring well for the Owls was freshman Stephanie Dorantes placed fifth in the 3000m (3rd collegiate finisher) with a time of 10:50.02. Williams, who was a key part of the 4x4, placed fifth in the 300m with a time of 41.07.
In the short sprints, sophomore Crystal Hercules finished fourth in the 55m dash with a time of 7.34. Freshman Auriel Dickey placed seventh in the 55m hurdles, running 9.03. In the mile, senior Jen Berman came in strong with a second place finish in a time of 6:08.98.
The Owls will have some time off for finals before competing again next semester in the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory, taking place January 15 at the 168th St. Armory in New York City.
