Owls close out final game in McGonigle Hall with a 66-54 win

PHILADELPHIA – The game went on despite a blizzard in Philadelphia, and Temple's Qwedia Wallace scored 22 points to lead the Owls to a 66-54 win against visiting Massachusetts (9-15, 3-6). Temple improves to 18-6 overall and 7-2 in Atlantic 10 play, and the Owls have won eight of their last nine contests.
Wallace was 4-of-6 from behind the arc and scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half. Also in double figures for Temple were LaKeisha Eaddy with 14 points and Kristen McCarthy with 13. McCarthy added a game-high nine rebounds along with five assists. Kristie Watkins-Day led all players with six assists, also scoring seven points.
Diatiema Hill went an impressive 7-of-10 from the field and led UMass with 18 points and five assists.
Temple led by as many as 11 with 5:47 remaining in the first half, but Massachusetts closed the half on an 8-2 run and trailed by just five, 27-22 at the break.
McCarthy hit two three-pointers within the first two minutes of the second half, but Temple still led by only eight at the 15:35 mark.
That's when Wallace turned it on, scoring 11 points in a 16-4 run that saw the Owls take a 20-point, 54-34 lead at the halfway point. The lead stayed close to 20 down the stretch, before the Minutewomen made a run in the last three minutes.
UMass was able to cut the margin from 21 to 12 as the Owls went scoreless in the final 3:16, but Temple's lead was too much to overcome.
Tonight's game was the last of the season at McGonigle Hall, and the Owls will play their remaining three home games at the Liacouras Center. Next up is a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 13, starting with the women's game against Charlotte at 1:00 p.m.
