Game Notes vs. Charlotte

PHILADELPHIA - In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 13, the Temple women's basketball team (18-6, 7-2) will face defending Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Charlotte (15-9, 8-2) at 1:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The #21/21 Temple men's basketball team will play Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m., all as part of the celebration for Hooter the Owl's birthday.

Temple is 8-1 in its last nine games, most recently earning a 66-54 win vs. Massachusetts on Feb. 10. At 7-2, the Owls are currently tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 with Dayton, behind Xavier (9-0), Duquesne (8-1) and Charlotte (8-2).

Defense has been the key for Temple all season long, as the Owls have held their opponents to an average of 53.6 points per game which ranks 11th in NCAA Division I. Rebounding has been a big strength for Temple in A-10 play, and over the last five games the Owls have out-rebounded their opponents 207-109.

Sophomore Kristen McCarthy and junior Qwedia Wallace lead the Owls with 13.2 and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Senior Jasmine Stone leads the team in rebounds at 8.9 per game, good enough for fourth place in the A-10.

Senior LaKeisha Eaddy (8.1 ppg, 3.6 apg) recently became the 17th player in the history of the program to score 1,000 career points, getting the mark in TU's loss to St. Bonaventure. Eaddy now ranks 16th all-time with 1,027 points.

Sophomore BJ Williams (7.1 ppg, 3.2 apg) started in seven of first eight A-10 games before sitting out the past two games with a calf injury. Williams is averaging 9.7 points per game and 5.1 assists per game in A-10 play. Junior Marli Bennett (5.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg) has started every game this season, and is the reigning Big 5 Player of the Week after averaging 11 points per game and eight rebounds per game in two wins last week.

SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
Charlotte has had a strong run of late, similar to Temple as both teams have won eight of their last nine contests. For A-10 games, the 49ers have almost identical stats to Temple in scoring and rebounding. Five players average 8.6 points per game or more for Charlotte, led by Shannon McCallum with 13.1 ppg and 7.3 rpg.

The 49ers do not rely on the three-point shot as much as the Owls, having made just 3.7 three-pointers per game in conference play compared to 5.9 per game by Temple.

SERIES RECORD
Temple holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series against Charlotte. The Owls lost the first meeting in 1998, but have gone 4-1 since 2006. Last year, Temple earned a win in the regular season on the road, 77-73, but was later knocked out in the A-10 semifinals by the 49ers who earned a convincing, 73-50 win.

SHATTERING THE GLASS
The Owls aren't just crashing the glass, they are finishing each game with significantly more rebounds than their opponents. For the season, TU's rebounding margin of +7.0 ranks 25th in NCAA Division I. In A-10 play, Temple has a +13.6 rebound margin to rank second in the conference behind Xavier at +15.6. Over the last four games, TU has out-rebounded its opponents 207-109.

TOUGH STRETCH OF GAMES AHEAD
Temple's next three opponents are all in the top five of the A-10 standings, making this stretch extremely important in terms of final regular season standings.

HEIGHTENED SECURITY
Temple has held 18 of its 24 opponents this season to 56 points or fewer, and currently ranks 11th in NCAA Division I in scoring defense at 53.6 ppg.

Temple's win vs. Penn on Jan. 23 showcased one of its best defensive performances. Penn's 31 points were a season-low by a TU opponent, and rank as the second-lowest for any A-10 opponent this season.

TAKING IT AWAY
LaKeisha Eaddy currently ranks in fourth place all-time at Temple in career steals with 225. She doesn't have far to go to reach #1, currently Pam Balogh with 237.

CONSISTENT KRISTEN
Kristen McCarthy has been TU's most consistent performer on offense all season long. The sophomore, who has started all 24 games, is leading the team at 13.2 ppg and has scored in double figures in 11 of the last 12 contests.

DOUBLING UP
Senior Jasmine Stone has tallied seven double-doubles this season which ranks as the most on the team and is the fourth-most this season in the A-10. Most recently, Stone notched a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Owls' loss to St. Bonaventure on Jan. 30.

HALFTIME INDICATION
First-half results have been a strong indicator for TU's success this season. The Owls are 16-1 when leading at halftime, and just 2-5 when trailing.

1,000 POINT CLUB
LaKeisha Eaddy scored the 1,000 point of her career against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 30. Her 1,027 career points rank 16th all-time at Temple, and two more points will move her up to sole possession of 15th.

BRACKETOLOGY
ESPN's Charlie Creme has TU projected to earn an NCAA berth as a #10 seed, according to his latest bracket posted on Feb. 1.

NEXT UP...
Temple's break from travel outside of Philly is almost over, as the Owls play only one more game in the stretch. TU will face Duquesne on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m.

That contest is both Temple's School Day Game as well as the WBCA Pink Zone game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support in the fight against breast cancer.
