Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - It is Hooter The Owl's Birthday Saturday and the University's beloved mascot would like no better gift than a #21/21 Temple men's basketball win over visiting Rhode Island in a huge Atlantic 10 game between the conference's top two RPI teams. The Owls (19-5, 7-2), ranked #16 according to realtimerpi.com, defeated the Rams (19-4, 7-3), #19 realtimerpi.com, 68-64 in overtime in Kingston on Jan. 10. The game, televised locally on Comcast SportsNet (4:00 p.m.) is the second game of a doubleheader with the Temple women hosting Charlotte at 1:00 p.m.
Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, has dropped two of its last four games after opening the season at 18-3. The slide has coincided with a head injury to sophomore Juan Fernandez (12.3 ppg., 3.5 apg.) suffered in the second half of the Fordham game. The 6-4 Argentine guard was held out of the team's loss at Richmond last Saturday, and totalled just 12 points on five-of-17 shooting over the three games he has played since the injury.
Senior guard Ryan Brooks continues to lead the Owls with a 15.0 scoring average. Junior forward Lavoy Allen (11.1 ppg./10.6 rpg.), coming off a career-high 19 rebounds at Richmond, is one of three A-10 players averaging a double-double. Sophomore guard Ramone Moore (6.5 ppg.), who has led TU in scoring the last three games, made his first start at Richmond in place of Fernandez. Senior Luis Guzman (5.4 ppg.) and sophomore Micheal Eric (4.9 ppg.) round out the Owls starting five.
Senior guard Keith Cochran leads a trio of Ram double figure scorers for head coach Jim Baron. He is joined by junior forward Delroy James (13.7 ppg.), who scored 23 in the first meeting, and senior forward Lamonte Ulmer (12.2 ppg./7.5 rpg.), who owns five double-doubles this season.
The Owls lead the series, 52-15, and have won the last two meetings.
