PHILADELPHIA - PHILADELPHIA - The #21/21 Temple Owls celebrated Hooter The Owl's birthday by scoring a season-high in point on a school-record 68.6 percent from the field in a 78-56 blowout of Rhode Island Saturday afternoon in front of 7,080 fans at the Liacouras Center. Temple, which posted its third straight 20-win season and 31st in its history, improves to 20-5 overall and 8-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Rhode Island falls to 19-5 and 7-4.
The Owls made 20 of their 27 shots (74.1%) in the first half to take a commanding 43-23 lead at the break. The Cherry and White stayed red-hot, making their first eight shots after intermission to keep the Rams on their heels. URI, which was held to a season-low point total, never was able to climb back into the contest.
Sophomore forward Micheal Eric led four TU double figure scorers with a career-high 19 points. Eric, who posted his fourth double-figure game of the season, made nine-of-10 from the field.
Senior guard Ryan Brooks, who had scored nine points in the previous two games, double that with 18 points on seven-of-eight shooting. The Owls co-captain, just 2-of-13 from three-point range over the last three outings, made all four of his attempts today as Temple established another new school single-game record (6-6, 100%).
Junior forward Lavoy Allen, who did not grab his first rebound until midway through the second half, made eight-of-10 shots for 17 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
Sophomore guard Ramone Moore, making his second start, reached double figures for the fourth straight game, making six-of-nine from the floor for 12 points.
Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez, who sat out the Richmond game due to lingering effects from a head injury, came off the bench to play 18 minutes. He made his lone three-point attempt and dished a game-high six assists.
Temple also tied its season high with 23 assists in the contest with Eric distributing a career-high four in the win.
The play of the game came on an alley-oop from Fernandez to T.J. DiLeo that made it 39-19. That was part of a 17-4 Temple run that broke the game open in the first half.
Delroy James and Akeem Richmond led URI with 11 points each.
Temple next plays at St. Bonaventure Wednesday night (7:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT).
