ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - The #20/21 Temple men's basketball team takes to the road this week, opening a two-game Atlantic 10 Conference swing with a Wednesday Night game (7:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT) at St. Bonaventure. The Owls close the week Saturday at The Palestra against Saint Joseph's in a game that will also count in the Philadelphia Big 5 standings.
The Owls (20-5, 8-2), who posted their third straight 20-win season with Saturday's 78-56 win over Rhode Island, are locked in a three-way tie for second place in the A-10 Conference standings, one-half game behind #25/NR Richmond (20-6, 9-2). Senior guard Ryan Brooks continues to pace head coach Fran Dunphy's squad with a 15.1 scoring average.
Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (11.9 ppg.), who returned to action against the Rams after missing a game due to a head injury, leads the A-10 in three-point percentage (49-111, .441). Junior forward Lavoy Allen (11.4 ppg./10.4 rpg.), looking to become the first Owl to average a double-double in nearly 40 years, rounds out the team's double-figure scorers.
Normally the Owls' nationally-ranked defense leads the way, but against Rhode Island it was the offense that lifted the team to victory. Temple blistered the nets for school records in field goal (35-51, .686) and three-point (6-6, 100%) percentages.
St. Bonaventure (10-13, 3-7), under the direction of head coach Mark Schmidt, is locked in a three-way tie for the 12th and final spot in the conference tournament. The Bonnies have dropped five of their last six games, but own a 7-4 mark in the friendly confines of the Reilly Center.
Sophomore forward Andrew Nicholson (16.5 ppg./7.7 rpg.) leads the SBU attack and ranks sixth in the A-10 in scoring and seventh in rebounding. Senior guards Jonathan Hall (12.7 ppg.) and Chris Matthews (11.5 ppg.) also average double figures for the Bonnies.
Temple leads the series 49-6, and has won the last 11 meetings.
