2.16.10 | Women's Basketball

Owls and Dukes currently tied for second in the Atlantic 10 standings at 8-2

Game Notes vs. Duquesne

PHILADELPHIA - Temple's women's basketball game on Wednesday at noon against Duquesne in the Liacouras Center has been designated both the Owls' “School Day” game as well as the WBCA “Pink Zone” game, supporting the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as part of the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association initiative, which has more than 1,550 schools and organizations participating.

Behind a record-setting 42 points from Kristen McCarthy, Temple defeated Charlotte 79-68 on Feb. 13 to improve to 8-2 in the Atlantic 10. That record ties the Owls for second with their next two opponents, Duquesne and Dayton. Xavier is undefeated and in first place at 10-0.

Temple is 9-1 in its last 10 games, and the win over Charlotte was a big one. The 49ers are the defending A-10 Tournament champs, and were 8-2 in conference play this year before losing to Temple. McCarthy's performance broke TU's 27-year old single-game scoring record, and earned her A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week honors.

SCOUTING DUQUESNE
Duquesne has three players averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Samantha Pollino with 12.7 ppg along with a team-best 6.2 rpg. The Dukes had recently won four in a row before having the streak snapped at #6 Xavier with a 74-55 loss. Duquesne's only other A-10 loss is to Dayton. The Dukes earned a big non-conference win at the end of December, defeating #19 Pittsburgh, 72-63.

SERIES RECORD
Temple is 27-11 all-time against Duquesne, and had won 10 straight until the Dukes took a 68-57 win in Pittsburgh a year ago. The Owls' last victory was exactly two years ago on Feb. 17, 2008, at home by a score of 74-66.

42 FOR MCCARTHY
Kristen McCarthy put on a show in TU's 79-68 win over Charlotte on Feb. 13, scoring 42 points to break the program's single-game scoring record. The extraordinary effort earned her A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week honors. The 42 points also tie for the second-most in a single game in the history of A-10 women's basketball, and are the most in the A-10 since 1998. The performance ties for the ninth-most points in NCAA Division I this season. In addition to the impressive scoring output, McCarthy notched a double-double with 11 rebounds in the Charlotte win.

SHATTERING THE GLASS
The Owls aren't just crashing the glass, they are finishing each game with significantly more rebounds than their opponents. For the season, TU's rebounding margin of +6.8 ranks 18th in NCAA Division I. In A-10 play, Temple has a +12.3 rebound margin to rank second in the conference behind Xavier at +16.5. Over the last five games, TU has out-rebounded its opponents 242-143.

WBCA "PINK ZONE" GAME
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The window set aside for this year's initiative is February 12-21, and over 1,550 schools and organizations have committed to participating.

HEIGHTENED SECURITY
Temple has held 18 of its 25 opponents this season to 56 points or fewer, and currently ranks 15th in NCAA Division I in scoring defense at 54.2 ppg.

Temple's win vs. Penn on Jan. 23 showcased one of its best defensive performances. Penn's 31 points were a season-low by a TU opponent, and rank as the second-lowest for any A-10 opponent this season.

TAKING IT AWAY
LaKeisha Eaddy currently ranks in fourth place all-time at Temple in career steals with 227. She doesn't have far to go to reach #1, currently Pam Balogh with 237.

HALFTIME INDICATION
First-half results have been a strong indicator for TU's success this season. The Owls are 17-1 when leading at halftime, and just 2-5 when trailing.

1,000 POINT CLUB
LaKeisha Eaddy scored the 1,000 point of her career against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 30. Her 1,041 career points rank 15th all-time at Temple, and three more points will move her up to sole possession of 14th.

BRACKETOLOGY
ESPN's Charlie Creme has TU projected to earn an NCAA berth as a #10 seed, according to his latest bracket posted on Feb. 1.

NEXT UP...
Temple's has not left the Philadelphia area for a six-game stretch, but that is now coming to an end as the Owls will travel to Dayton for their next contest on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
