Williams locks down top times in 400m and 500m

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Paris Williams looks to defend her title as A-10 Indoor Women's Track Performer of the Year as the Temple women's track & field team competes in the 2010 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, held February 19-20 at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.

Williams boasts top times in the 400m and 500m, running 56.16 and 1:13.34, respectively. The 2009 500m dash champion, Williams is joined by freshman sensation Victoria Gocht in the event. Gocht burst onto the scene early in the season, and posted her best time at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational (1:14.33).

Gocht found success in the 800m as well, shattering the school record in the event with a time of 2:09.09, which ranks second in the conference.

The Owls have a hold on the conference's best relays times, looking to defend the title in the 4x400m. Comprised of Gocth, Williams, Shaina Roberts, and Tessa West, the 4x400m team posted a time of 3:45.54 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

The 4x800m team (Gocht, Williams, Tashima Stephens, Shadaya Bennett) had a record setting performance at the Penn State National Invitational, breaking a 23-year old Temple mark running a time of 9:06.05.

Consistently one of the top pole vault competitors in the conference over the last four years, senior Melissa (Gale) Hand bettered her school record with a vault of 12-0 at the Widener Invitational, a mark that ranks third in the conference.

Also in the field, senior Brittney McRae ranks second in the conference in the long jump, posting a leap of 18-05.25 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. McRae is also expected to compete in the 55m hurdles, ranking sixth in the conference with a time of 8.25.

The two-day championship will be streamed live on www.atlantic10.org, beginning on Friday at 9:00 a.m. The cost is $7.95 for a two-day pass, while annual subscribers to A-10 All-Access will receive the event as part of their subscription. Live stats will also be available through the A-10 website.
