Game Notes vs. Dayton (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's basketball currently stands alone at second place in the Atlantic 10 with a record of 9-2 heading into a road game at Dayton on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m. The Owls' last two opponents had both been tied with them for second, and both were defeated.

Dayton stands just behind Temple in the standings at 8-3 after very narrowly falling to #6/6 Xavier by a score of 80-79 in overtime on Wednesday. Xavier is undefeated in the A-10 at 11-0.

Behind a record-setting 42 points from Kristen McCarthy, TU defeated Charlotte 79-68 on Feb. 13. McCarthy was the leader once again in TU's 52-41 win vs. Duquesne on Feb. 17, with 18 points including 16 in the second half.

Temple is 10-1 in its last 11 games, and just reached the 20-win mark for the seventh straight year. The Owls are currently projected to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, but cannot afford losses to un-ranked opponents.

Defense has been the key for Temple all season long, as the Owls have held their opponents to an average of 53.7 points per game which ranks 11th in NCAA Division I. Rebounding has been a big strength for Temple in A-10 play, and over the last seven games the Owls have out-rebounded their opponents 292-168.

SCOUTING DAYTON
Dayton has an identical overall record with Temple at 20-6, and was ranked at one point during the non-conference season. Their 12-3 non-conference record included a win over current #14 Georgetown as well as a win vs. Michigan State. Three Dayton players average 9.5 ppg or above, led by Justine Raterman at 12.3 ppg.

The Flyers very nearly knocked off #6/6 Xavier on Feb. 17, and were up by as many as 13 points before eventually losing 80-79 in overtime.

SERIES RECORD
Temple and Dayton are tied at 9-9 all-time, but the Owls have dominated the series since 2003 with a record of 8-1. The lone loss was on the road in 2008, and Temple has since won two straight including a 62-52 decision in Philadelphia last year.

IN CONTROL
Winners of 10 of their last 11 games, the Owls stand alone at second place in the A-10 and will secure that spot by winning their last three games. Xavier is undefeated at 11-0, and is highly unlikely to surrender the #1 seed. Temple entered the 2009 A-10 Tournament as the #2 seed, but was upset in the semifinals by #3 Charlotte.

SEVENTH-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON
Temple's win vs. Duquesne on Feb. 17 was its 20th of the season, giving the Owls 20 wins for the seventh straight year. The feat has been accomplished 11 times in the history of the program, dating back to 1923.

THAMES MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Freshman Natasha Thames has been a big part of TU's five-game win streak, as she is the team's leading rebounder during that stretch with 8.6 boards per game. She has grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds twice, at La Salle (2/6) and vs. Duquesne (2/17).

42 FOR MCCARTHY
Kristen McCarthy put on a show in TU's 79-68 win over Charlotte on Feb. 13, scoring 42 points to break the program's single-game scoring record. The extraordinary effort earned her A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week honors. The 42 points also tie for the second-most in a single game in the history of A-10 women's basketball, and are the most in the A-10 since 1998. The performance ties for the ninth-most points in NCAA Division I this season.

In addition to the impressive scoring output, McCarthy notched a double-double with 11 rebounds in the win.

FIVE STEALS AWAY FROM #1
Senior LaKeisha Eaddy has recorded 232 steals in her career, and is only five away from tying for the number one spot all-time. She currently stands in fourth on a list that is extremely tight at the top.

TU Career Steals
1.    Pam Balogh (1985-89)    237
2.    Dallese Jackson (1988-92)    236
3.    Kamesha Hairston (2003-07)    235
4.    LaKeisha Eaddy (2006-pres)    232

SHATTERING THE GLASS
The Owls aren't just crashing the glass, they are finishing each game with significantly more rebounds than their opponents.

For the season, TU's rebounding margin of +7.5 ranks 13th in NCAA Division I. In A-10 play, Temple has a +13.5 rebound margin to rank second in the conference behind Xavier at +16.1. Over the last five games, TU has out-rebounded its opponents 292-168.

1,000 POINT CLUB
LaKeisha Eaddy scored the 1,000 point of her career against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 30. Her 1,043 career points rank tied for 14th all-time at Temple.

BRACKETOLOGY
ESPN's Charlie Creme has TU projected to earn an NCAA berth as a #9 seed, according to his latest bracket posted on Feb. 16.
