McRae wins long jump, Gale places third in pole vault
Day One Results
KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Brittney McRae took the title in the long jump and classmate Melissa Gale placed third in the pole vault to push the Temple women's track & field team to third place at the end of the first day of competition in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship, hosted at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. The Owls have 35 points after six events scored.
“It was a great first day, but like I told the team it's a two day event,” commented head coach Eric Mobley. “Hopefully we can enter tomorrow with the same enthusiasm, put some things together, and put together another great day.”
McRae placed first in the long jump with a leap of 19-00.75, and was closely followed by classmate Christiana Taylor. Taylor landed 18-02.50 to finish third in the event.
Gale bettered her school record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-03.50 to place third. Also in the field, sophomore Alanna Owen scored points placing seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 53-03.00.
Two Owls – freshman Victoria Gocht and junior Tashima Stephens – qualified for the finals in the 800m run. Gocht ran the third best time of the day in the event, crossing the tape in a time of 2:17.33 while Stephens finished in a time of 2:18.39.
Freshman Tessa West turned in the fastest 500m run time of the day, finishing in 1:16.19.
A pair of Temple athletes qualified for the 400m finals. Junior Paris Williams clocked the second fastest time of the day (56.68), with freshman Sheina Roberts finishing in 57.97.
Williams will also be in the running for the 200m title, qualifying for the finals in a time of 25.67. McRae notched a time of 8.18 in the 55m hurdles to advance to the finals with teammate Brittany Clybourn, who ran a time of 8.26.
In the pentathlon, Taylor sits in third place with 3384 points, while senior Shaniece Stonewall is in fourth with 3176 points.
The Cherry and White start things off with the high jump, where junior Abigail Blomeke and Stonewall will compete at 9:00 a.m. Live stats will be available on the A-10 website.
