Owls secure at least third seed in upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament

Box Score (PDF)

RICHMOND, Va. – Scoring the third-most points of any game this season, Temple women's basketball held off Richmond (16-11, 5-7) on the road for a 77-67 win. The Owls (21-7, 10-3) have secured at least the third seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but will play one more regular-season game.

Dayton would have to suffer an unlikely loss to La Salle in its final game this Saturday in order for Temple to have a shot at the second seed. Regardless, the Owls will have a first-round bye in the tournament.

Kristen McCarthy led TU with 17 points, scoring 15 of those in the second half. Marli Bennett scored 14 points, and LaKeisha Eaddy also scored in double figures with 13 points. Eaddy dished out a game-high five assists, and recorded two steals which now has her tied for second all-time at TU in career steals with 236. One more steal will put her in a tie for first.

Jasmine Stone pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Temple, while Bennett and McCarthy grabbed seven boards apiece.

The first half saw five ties and five lead changes, but the Owls held two six-point leads that Richmond battled back from both times to tie the score.

The fifth tie of the half came at 27-27 before TU went on an 8-0 run ending with fast break layups by Eaddy and Stone.

Foul trouble was costly for Temple in the final two minutes of the half as the Spiders scored six points at the line, but Richmond managed only two field goals in the final eight minutes.

TU finished the first half shooting 51.6 percent from the field and led 39-35 at the break, scoring the most points in a first half this season.

The Owls were up 46-39 in the second half before a 9-2 Richmond run once again tied the score, at 48-48 with 10:49 remaining. The Spiders then took over the lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Katie Holzer.

Five lead changes followed, ending with Temple taking a lead it would not relinquish, on a jumper from McCarthy that put the Owls up 59-58. Bennett came up with big rebounds as the teams battled, and helped keep TU on top.

Temple led 63-62 before scoring back-to-back buckets. Richmond was forced to try fouling with just over a minute remaining, but the Owls went 10-of-12 at the stripe to thwart any comeback attempts.

Temple has one game remaining in the regular season, and will play it at home. The Owls will face George Washington at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Liacouras Center. TU's three seniors and two senior managers will be honored prior to tip-off.
