DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Temple softball team dropped a pair of games at Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. The Owls, residing in Florida for the week during spring break, dropped a 2-1 extra inning first game, and fell 8-4 in the nightcap.

In game one, Bethune-Cookman got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats opened the inning with a walk, but Temple pitcher Kristen Marris induced a ground out and struck out a batter to get two outs with a runner on second. Allison Garcia delivered a timely single that scored Ashton Hinds from second for the early lead.

The game moved along quickly over the next five innings with neither team able to generate much offense. The Owls finally got to the Wildcats pitching staff in the top of the seventh. Rachel Knable led off the inning with a single and Christina Sykora drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Marris reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Samantha Schoell stepped up and showed patience at the plate to draw an RBI walk and tie the game at 1-1.

Marris shut down B-CU in the bottom of the frame, forcing a foul out and striking out two, to send the game to extra innings.

After TU came up empty in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats put a two-out rally together that started with an Aurelia Gamch triple to right field. A walk put runners on the corners, and a miscue by Temple on a batted ball by Garcia allowed Gamch to score the game winner.

Marris took the loss for the Cherry & White, scattering four hits over 7.2 innings while striking out five. Garcia picked up the win after 3.0 innings of work, giving up three hits and one earned run.

Where game one lacked scoring, game two made up for it. Temple led 1-0 at the end of the first inning after Danielle Fagan registered a two-out single up the middle to score Marris, who had led off the game with a walk.

Bethune-Cookman also jumped on the Owls early, scoring four runs in the second and three in the third for the early 7-1 lead.

TU got back in the game with a three-run fourth inning on three hits. With two outs, Alysse Pujol singled to left center and Marris drew a walk. Sykora delivered a two RBI triple to right field for the first two runs of the frame. Temple's third run came in on an error before B-CU could get out of the inning with the lead cut to 7-4.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Garcia homered for the second time in the game. Neither team could cross the plate again, and Bethune-Cookman came away with an 8-4 win and the doubleheader sweep.

Chastity Sanders earned the win for B-CU, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned. Crystal Nyman took the loss for Temple, with 2.2 innings of work, four hits and seven runs, six earned.

Temple is 4-7 overall and will be in action again on Friday, March 12, at the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. The Owls face Maine at 3 p.m. for their first game. Bethune-Cookman is 10-13 overall.
