AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team opened Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, March 27, dropping two games to visiting Saint Louis at Ambler Field. The Owls dropped a 5-2 decision in the opener, and fell 8-1 in the nightcap.
In game one, Kristen Marris carried a one-hitter one out into the sixth inning, but still trailed 3-2. Saint Louis scored all three of its runs to that point in the second inning. The Billikens filled the bases before Kristin Nicoletti singled through the left side to plate a run. SLU's other two runs of the frame came when Marris hit back-to-back batters to force in the runs.
The Owls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Ali Robinson led off the inning with a walk and Danielle Fagan delivered a timely double to left centerfield to plate her. TU struck again in the bottom of the fifth when Kayla Cook singled down the leftfield line with two outs to bring in Sam Schoell who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Saint Louis got to Marris for one more hit in the sixth, a two-run homerun from Nicoletti over the right centerfield fence to move ahead 5-2.
Temple had its best opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. Crystal Nyman led it off with a single up the middle and Michelle Lerner followed with a single to left field. Christina Sykora was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and with two outs, Fagan stepped in and delivered a warning track shot to left field that was caught to get the Bills out of the jam.
Marris was the hard luck loser in the game, allowing just the two hits and striking five, but hitting seven batters. Kelcie Matesa got the win, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts and eight hits.
In the nightcap, Saint Louis struck early and in bunches, scoring one in the second, four in the third and three in the sixth. The Billikens first four runs came on homers from the bats of Kelly Flanagan (first) and Caitlin Trevillyan (fourth) and a two-run shot by Rachel Faletto (fourth).
The Cherry & White cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a home run of their own from Cook, her first career shot.
Faletto continued her strong game at the plate, delivering a two-run double to left center in the sixth. SLU got one more run in the inning on an Erin Cejka sacrifice fly to wrap up the scoring.
Hannah Huebbe earned the win for Saint Louis, going the distance and allowing just four hits while striking out four. Crystal Nyman took the loss, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Lauren Spoo pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for Temple.
