Owls drop just one singles match on way to victory
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After an intense doubles point went Temple's way, the Owls cruised in singles play to pick up a 6-1 win over visiting Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne on Saturday, March 27 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The win improves TU's record to 5-9, while Duquesne drops to 5-9 overall.
The Dukes got the early upper hand in doubles play, defeating Lucie Pazderova and Katharina Mittag, 8-2, at number one. May Johnson and Theresa Stangl came through at number three with an 8-3 victory to put Temple in position to still win the point.
Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and Josephine Bergman took the task seriously, playing a thrilling seesaw match against Erin Conroy and Megan O'Sullivan. After it came down to a tiebreaker, the Owls proved victorious with the 8-7 (2) win to take the point and the early lead.
In singles play, the Dukes got on the board when Pazderova retired due to injury at number one, but from there, it was all Temple. Particularly impressive was Rukavyshnykova's win at number three, a straight-set defeat of O'Sullivan, 6-4, 6-3, for her fifth-straight singles victory.
“Tonight was a great win for the women's team,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “To play to win against one of the top teams in the A-10, despite have several injuries, was a great accomplishment. The girls fought hard and probably had their best win of the season. We hope to keep the momentum going, get healthier and get ready for A-10's.”
TU returns to the courts with a match at Saint Joseph's on April 1 at 3:00 p.m.
