Box Score
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Temple softball team opened up play that 2010 Under Armour Invitational with a game against Bradley on Friday, March 5. The Owls dropped a 2-1 decision to the Braves at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Bradley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when pitcher Amanda Clack scored on a single by Brittany Fairbairn. Clack had opened the game with a single, before stealing second, and then scoring on Fairbairn's hit. With no outs and a runner on third, Owls pitcher Kristen Marris settled in a struck out the next two batters. After a walk put runners on the corners, Temple got out of the inning, catching Taylor Cox leaving first early.
The Cherry and White went three up, three down in the bottom of the first and the two teams combined for four more scoreless innings. TU threatened in the bottom of the second and fifth innings, thanks to two errors from the Braves, but Clack found a way out of it each time to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Bradley added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Janey Mitchell delivered a two-out double that scored pinch hitter Alison Kresl, who had reach base with a single.
The Owls cut the lead in half in their portion of the inning after two walks and a fielder's choice put runners at second and third. The Braves forced a ground out on the next play, but a passed ball allowed Samantha Schoell to score Temple's only run of the game to make it 2-1.
Temple had one last shot in the bottom of the seventh when Crystal Nyman opened the inning with TU's only hit of the game, a single to shortstop. The Owls got aggressive on the base path when pinch runner Alysse Pujol tried to score on a throwing error by the first baseman, but the Bradley left fielder got the ball and alertly made the throw home to get Pujol short of the plate.
Marris tossed all seven innings for the Cherry & White, giving up seven hits while striking out 10 batters. Clack was stellar for the Braves, going the distance in the one-hitter with four strikeouts.
Temple is 1-4 and will play Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m. Bradley improves to 7-4.
