CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Temple softball team got back in the win column with a 6-1 win over Quinnipiac at the Under Armour Invitational on Friday, March 5. The game was the second of the day for the Owls, and the second of the five game weekend.
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of two walks and one hit. With two outs and two runners on, Alysse Pujol drew a walk to load the bases. Kristen Marris followed with another walk to force in Rachel Knable for the early TU lead.
The Cherry & White exploded for four run in the top of the fourth to go ahead 5-0. With one out, Pujol
drew another walk and Marris followed with a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Pujol scored on Samantha Dungan's ground out to second, before Ali Robinson and Danielle Fagan delivered two-straight run scoring singles to chase Bobcats pitcher Alejandra Alba. New QU pitcher Emily Bellush wasn't greeted with a much warmer welcome as Kayla Cook singled to center field to score Fagan for the fourth run of the inning.
Temple tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout by Dungan.
Quinnipiac got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late, and the game went to TU, 6-1.
Crystal Nyman went the distance on the mound for Temple, giving up four hits and allowing just one run. Alba pitched 3.2 innings for the Bobcats, allowing five hits and walking six before handing the ball over to Bellush, who gave up four hits in her 3.1 innings of work.
The Owls are 2-4 overall and will face Loyola-Chicago at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 6. Quinnipiac is 3-5.
