Johnson continues strong play with three set win at number five

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Temple women's tennis team dropped a close match at Penn State on Saturday, March 6. The Owls won three singles matches, but came up short to the Nittany Lions, 4-3.

Penn State jumped out to an early 1-0 win after sweeping the doubles competition. The Nittany Lions extended their lead and clinched the match victory with three-straight singles wins. To close out the match, TUcame out on top in two singles matches and also won on the number six court due to retirement.

In doubles play, the duo of Amy Simidian and Sarah Henderson set the tone early, dropping May Johnson and Katharina Mittag in third doubles, 8-4. Maria Prishlyak and Petra Januskova secured the point with a defeat of Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and Lucie Pazderova on the the first flight, 8-4.

With Penn State leading 1-0, the match moved into singles play. Lauren McCarthy fell behind Josephine Bergman early in fourth singles, 4-1. The senior then rallied to take a straight set win, 6-2, 6-1, putting the Nittany Lions ahead 2-0. Simidian blanked Pazderova in the first set of second doubles, 6-0. She continued to dominate in the second set, taking a 6-2 win for the straight-set victory.

At number one, Rukavyshnykova trailed by only one game at 3-2 in the first set, but Januskove, the 66th ranked player in the nation, held her off to take a 6-2 win. The Penn State freshman clinched the match victory for her team as she shut Rukavyshnykova out in the second set, 6-0.

At the third flight, Theresa Stangl jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Prishlyak came back to get within 5-4. Stangl held on to take the set, 6-4, and tally a 6-2 win in the second set for Temple's first point of the afternoon.

Michaela Stracar was leading Mittag on the number six court, 3-2, but was forced to retire due to injury, putting the match score at 4-2.

In the final match of the day, Johnson got out to a 2-1 lead in the first set at the fifth flight, but ended up surrendering to Henderson, 6-2. Johnson responded, however, with a 6-3 victory in the second set and came away with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker.

The Cherry & White fall to 3-5 overall and are back in action on Wednesday, March 10, against Bowling Green in Orlando, Fla.
