Owls Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Match to UMBC

Temple finishes regular season with 9-10 record
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Playing the final regular-season match of the 2010 campaign, the Temple men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to UMBC on Wednesday, April 14 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Owls carry a 9-10 record into the Atlantic 10 Championship this weekend.
In doubles play, the first two flights split the decision, leaving it up to the players on the third court to decide the point. Kacper Rams and Andrey Morozov paired up at number three and gave Chris Meyer and Mwali Phiri all they could handle, but it was the Retrievers' duo coming out on top of a 9-8 (3) decision.
Filip Rams evened the match at 1-1 with his straight set win at number one singles, failing to drop a game against Meyer in his 6-0, 6-0 decision. After UMBC picked up wins at the second and sixth flights, Dmitry Vizhunov kept it close with his 6-4, 6-4 decision over Gaulthier Berret at number four.
Fredi Voorman secured the match for the visitors, however, with a three-set, come-from-behind win against Kacper Rams at number three. Mansur Gishkaev made is a one point decision by wrapping up the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win at the fifth flight to win his fifth-straight singles match.
“Today was a tough match against a strong UMBC team,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “It came down to the doubles point that we unfortunately lost in a tiebreak, but I believe our new doubles team will only get better and we are very excited about the A-10 tournament this weekend.”
Temple is next in action on Friday, April 16, at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Monroeville, Pa. The Owls, the four seed in the event, will play either #5 Saint Louis or #12 Fordham at 2 p.m.
