Owls struggle against Rams, fall 6-0
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team ran into a buzzsaw on Friday, April 23, in the form of Fordham pitcher Jen Mineau. The sophomore, who ranks second in the nation with 384 strikeouts on the year, fanned the side three times en route to her second no-hitter of the season and fourth of her career in a 6-0 Rams victory.
Fordham got on the board early, plating two runs in the top of the first. Kristen Marris induced to fly balls to start the game with a quick two outs, but then hit Beckah Wiggins to give the visitors a baserunner. Erin Fisher followed with a single to move Wiggins into scoring position, and Samantha Pellechio drew a walk to load the bases. A miscue by Temple allowed Wiggins and Fisher to score before Marris got out of the inning with a foul fly ball to third.
The Rams got three more runs in their portion of the second, using just two hits to increase the lead. Jessica Richards led off the frame with a homerun. After another TU error put a runner on, Jamie LaBovick delivered a shot over the left centerfield wall to give her squad the 5-0 advantage. The guests got one more run in the game, again off of a home run, when Meghan Shager sent a solo shot over the right field fence.
Temple's only scoring opportunity came in the fifth when Danielle Fagan reached on an error to open the inning, but the Cherry & White stranded her at first after a foul out, a strike out and a ground out ended the inning.
Despite taking the loss, Marris (8-11) threw a solid game, giving up six hits while striking out seven and allowing just three earned runs. Mineau, who set the Fordham single-season win record with her 25th victory this year, went the distance in the near-perfect game, striking out 14.
