Women's Tennis Cruises to Second Round of A-10 Championship with 4-0 Opening Round Win

Third-seeded Owls defeat #14 La Salle; move on to face #6 UMass
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Playing in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, hosted by Saint Louis on April 23-25, 2010, the third-seeded Temple women's tennis team defeated 14th-seeded La Salle, 4-0. The Owls move on to face #6 Massachusetts, a 4-1 winner over #11 Saint Joseph's in the first round.
The Cherry & White started play off right, picking up the doubles point with wins at numbers two and three. Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and Lucie Pazderova teamed up to shutout Allison Amrein and Courtney Babo, 8-0, at the second flight. Theresa Stangl and May Johnson did their part with another 8-0 win at number three, defeating Pearl Wilkins and Sarah Chambers. Josephine Bergman and Katharina Mittag were ahead 7-1 in their number one match against Kiara Smith and Elli Vamvakitis, but it went unfinished once the point was clinched.
Winning in singles play for the Owls were Rukavyshnykova, Pazderova and Stangl. Rukavyshynkova, playing at number two, didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amrein, while Pazderova earned the shutout two-set sweep against Vamvakitis at the third flight. Stangl's 6-0, 6-1 victory over Babo at number three was enough to clinch the match.
Temple is 10-11 and will face #6 Massachusetts at 6 p.m. this evening.
