Women’s Track & Field Contends For Atlantic 10 Championship This Weekend

Cowart, 4x800m relay boast conference leading times

PHILADELPHIA – Placing fourth last season, the Temple women's track & field team has its' sights set on improving that finish when they travel to the University of Massachusetts for the 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 1-2. Currently, junior Assata Cowart and the 4x800m relay team own top marks in the conference heading into competition.

Cowart leads the conference with a time of 1:00.46 in the 400m hurdles, joined in the top five by senior Christiana Taylor (3rd, 1:01.04) and freshman Jade Wilson (4th, 1:01.63).

The women's 4x800m relay - Assata Cowart, Tashima Stephens, Shadaya Bennett, Victoria Gocht – clocked in a time of 8:57.39 at the Penn Relays, four seconds faster than the next best time in the conference.

Junior Paris Williams looks to defend her title in the 400m, currently ranking third in the A-10 with a season-best time of 55.45. Also ranking in the top five in an event is junior Tashima Stephens, who ranks fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:11.00.

In the 100m hurdles, senior Brittney McRae leads Temple with a time of 14.24, which ranks fourth in the conference. McRae is also a frontrunner in the long jump, posting the third-best mark of the year in the conference with a leap of 18-05 at the Penn Relays.

Senior Melissa (Gale) Hand looks to make her final conference championship a memorable one, holding the second-best pole vault in the conference at 12-01.50.

Also in the field, sophomore Ebony Moore boasts leads the Owls in the discus, posting a season-best throw of 151-10 which ranks second in the A-10.

The 2010 Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 8:45am on Saturday, May 1, with the women's heptathlon. On Sunday, May 2, the men's decathlon kicks off the second day of competition at 8:45am.
