Lacrosse Falls 16-7 to Defending A-10 Champ Massachusetts

PHILADELPHIA – Massachusetts jumped out to a 6-1 lead and the Temple lacrosse team was never able to recover, eventually falling 16-7 to the defending Atlantic 10 champs. UMass (6-6, 3-0) got five goals from junior Jackie Lyons while the Owls (4-6, 1-2) were led by freshman Charlotte Swavola with three goals.
Lyons scored first with a minute and a half elapsed in the contest, followed by a score from teammate Stephanie Hopkins. Temple senior Chelsea Rosiek got the Owls on the board four minutes in, but the Minutewomen then rattled off four straight.
Swavola helped out the Cherry and White with two goals down the stretch of the first half, but UMass scored twice as well to lead 8-3 at the break.
After Jesse O'Donnell scored one of her three goals on the day for the Minutewomen to start the first half, the Owls made a run.
Missy Schweitzer, Stephanie Markunas and Swavola each tallied goals over a two-minute span to pull Temple within three, 9-6 with 23:39 remaining. The comeback attempt ended there, as UMass dominated the rest of the way with seven goals to the Owls' one.
UMass finished with a 34-25 edge in shots on goal. Temple senior Jess Colucci made 10 saves for the Owls, while UMass got six saves from sophomore goalkeeper Katie Florence.
Temple will play its next contest on the road, traveling to St. Bonaventure for a 3:00 p.m. game on Friday, April 9.
