Temple Student-Athletes Post Impressive Records in the Classroom in 2009-10

6.7.10 | General

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University's intercollegiate athletic teams turned in a successful 2009-10 season on the field of play, but were even more impressive in the classroom. A program-record 15 teams maintain a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or above, and the accomplishments don't end there.

Seventeen of the Owls' 22 teams improved their GPA's, and of the five that did not, only one was not already above a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

The men's and women's basketball teams achieved their highest cumulative GPA's in the last three years. Six TU teams (men's gymnastics, field hockey, women's tennis, women's crew, lacrosse and men's soccer) have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA for the last three years.

“Our student-athletes have continued to raise the bar in the classroom,” Temple Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said. “I commend them for their hard work, and I am also very proud of all our coaches and our academic support staff who have done such a tremendous job keeping our student-athletes successful both on and off the field.”

An estimated 37 student-athletes have or will graduate this summer with a 3.0 GPA, up from 19 in 2009. An estimated 49 student-athletes have or will graduate this summer in four years- an increase from 25 in 2009.
