PHILADELPHIA - Men's crew senior Thomas Masterson and men's tennis sophomore Mansur Gishkaev were named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performers of the Year in their respective sports to highlight nine Owls named to the newspaper's spring academic all-star teams. The teams were voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Masterson, who also won the award last year, sat in the second seat for the varsity eight team guiding them to gold at the Bergen and Knecht Cups and silver at the SIRA Regatta and Murphy Cup. The varsity eight reached a national ranking of 19th during the year. His brother, John, also joins him on the men's crew academic all-area team.
Honored as the 2009-10 Temple male student athlete of the year, Masterson boasts a 3.78 grade point average as a biology major. He was on the Temple President's Honor Roll for posting a 4.0 in the fall, and earns all-academic team honors for the third time in his career.
Gishkaev finished the year with a 17-7 singles record that included a 7-2 mark at No.5 and a six-match winning streak throughout the year. A native of Moscow, he competed anywhere from the fourth to the sixth singles flights and competed at the second and third doubles flights in 2010. Gishkaev compiled a 3.79 cumulative grade point average as an economics major, earning President's Honor Roll this past year.
Also represented on their respective Academic All-Aream teams were John Masterson (men's crew) Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova (women's tennis), Ann Stouffer (women's lacrosse), Caitlin Pennington (women's crew), Erin Buchanan (women's crew), Krystle Metzler (softball) and Samantha Schoell (Softball).
