Witmer grabs Preseason All-Conference, Spurrier named to All-Rookie team
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2010 Men's Preseason All-Conference and All-Rookie teams were announced by the league today with two members of the Temple men's soccer team - junior forward Tyler Witmer and freshman midfielder/forward Vaughn Spurrier - being selected by the Atlantic 10's head coaches to the squads, respectively.
Witmer, a native of Wernersville, Pa. (Conrad Weiser), was the Owls leading goal scorer over the past two years, netting eight goals in his collegiate debut and six last season. A second team NSCAA/adidas All-Atlantic Region and All-A-10 pick in 2008, Witmer will be relied on heavily as the team's primary weapon this season.
Spurrier, garnering Preseason All-Rookie recognition, joins the Owls from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was honored as the 2009 Ohio State Player of the Year and a 2009 NSCAA/adidas High School Boys All-American. Also an All-State Division I first team honoree, Spurrier led his team to a runner-up finish in the state championship as a senior.
The Owls scrimmage with Delaware (8/23) and Penn (8/28) before opening 2010 season at the Lafayette Tournament, squaring off with Colgate on September 3 at 2:30 p.m. Temple's first home game of the season at Ambler Sports Complex is slated for September 11, as they host Philadelphia Soccer Six rival Drexel at 2:00 p.m.
