Seigfried nets to tie the game in the first
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. - Sophomore Morgyn Seigfried found the back of the net to tie the score in the first half, but a late goal from Niagara (1-0-0) left the Temple women's soccer team (1-2-0) with a 2-1 loss in the opening game of the Owl Eyes Classic, Friday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex.
Niagara came out of the gates hot, scoring in the fourth minute. Freshman Breeanna Catipovic crossed a pass from the right side for junior Adrianna Gallo, who hit a shot that caught Owls' keeper Kara Williams on the hand but managed to find the back of the net.
The Temple offense would not let up, fueled mainly by the steady play of junior Niki Conn. Conn nearly tied the game up in the 20th minute, finding herself one-on-one with Niagara keeper Ashleigh Bowers but unable to lift the ball over.
In the 23rd minute, Conn crossed a sharp pass to the center for Seigfried, who shot right post to knot the game at 1-1.
Conn again came close to scoring in the 51st minute, heading a pass from senior Kelly Diviny that needed a diving save from NU's Bowers to stop.
Niagara also continued to chip away, eventually tallying the eventual game winner in the 79th minute. Senior Chelsea Spencer hit a lofty corner that was headed in by freshman Danielle Kennedy.
"I thought we played well at times, but we just weren't consistent," said head coach David Jones. "We had a couple breakdowns where we gave them some opportunites for goals. Ultimately we are a work in progress and it's still early in the season. We need to get a little more confidence in ourselves, keep plugging along and I think we will be fine."
The Owls outshot Niagara on the game 13-11, dominating the first half 8-3. TU's Williams made five saves on the day.
The Temple women's soccer team closes out the Owl Eyes Classic on Sunday, as they take on Hartford at 1:00 p.m. In earlier action today, Hartford defeated Drexel by a margin of 2-0. The Dragons will take on Niagara prior to Temple's contest, with game time set for 11:00 a.m.
