Cowart shatters school record in the 1000m

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Assata Cowart shattered the school record in the 1000m by nearly four seconds as the Temple women's track & field team turned in a solid performance at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory. Cowart led the Owls to a fourth place finish and what was the team's most impressive performance of the season thus far.
Cowart ran a time of 2:55.78, topping Noelle McKenzie's (2008) former school record of 2:59.53, to place second in the event.
In the 200m dash, freshman Ambrosia Iwugo placed fifth with a time of 25.52 and senior Paris Williams turned in a mark of 25.88 to place 11th.
Williams took home top honors in the 400m, meeting ECAC qualifying marks with a time of 56.54. Sophomore Jade Wilson represented the Owls in the 500m, clocking in at 1:16.28 for sixth place.
Senior Tashima Stephens had a solid performance in the 800m run, placing fifth with a time of 2:17.61.
The 4x400m relay team - Shadaya Bennett, Tonney Smith, Stephens and Cowart - placed third with a time of 3:50.79 to meet ECAC qualifying marks.
In the field, sophomore Chelsea Robinson fared well in the triple jump, placing sixth with a mark of 36-10.50. Junior Alanna Owens fared well in the shot put, placing third with a toss of 41-10.75. She also placed sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 50-6.
Up next, Temple travels to compete at the Great Dane Classic on January 21.
