First Member Named to Addazio’s Staff

PHILADELPHIA – Frank Piraino has been named the head strength and conditioning coach for football at Temple University, head football coach Steve Addazio announced on Tuesday.

Piraino spent 2010 as the head strength and conditioning coach for football at Marshall University. Prior to joining the Marshall staff, he served on the strength and conditioning staff at the University of Florida for five years.

“Frank is one of the most respected strength and conditioning coaches in the country,” Addazio said. “His experiences at Michigan State, Notre Dame, Florida, and Marshall have prepared him for the job ahead. His knowledge and techniques in developing college athletes are on the cutting edge. When you talk to former players that Frank has trained, there is a common theme. He is a tough, no nonsense coach, who knows how to get the best out of you, and a person you respect and trust.”

“Working for Coach Addazio is something I've wanted to do for a long time,” Piraino said. “He's an excellent coach and a better person. He does everything the right way and emphasizes great values in his program. I'm really excited to be working for him and Temple and to be in Philadelphia.”

Piraino served as the strength and conditioning coordinator for Florida baseball in 2008. Additionally, Piraino assisted in all aspects of the Gator football strength and conditioning program from January 2005 to January 2010. During his tenure, the Orange and Blue captured a pair of National Championships and Southeastern Conference titles in both 2006 and 2008, under the direction of head coach Urban Meyer.

Piraino also was the director of the University of Florida's Speed and Agility Camp and its annual Strength and Conditioning Coaches' Clinic. He provided outreach education to high school and small college coaches and was responsible for hands-on training of all injured student-athletes.

Piraino is officially certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a strength and conditioning specialist and is recognized by USA Weightlifting as a club coach. Piraino is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa) and has passed the Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) certification examination.

In addition, Piraino has completed American Red Cross CPR training and earned his Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.

Prior to his arrival at Florida, Piraino was a strength and conditioning assistant at the University of Notre Dame from May 2004 until January 2005. He worked primarily with the Fighting Irish football squad, coached by Tyrone Willingham, that played in the Insight Bowl against Oregon State.

Between January 2003 and May 2004, Piraino was a graduate assistant at Michigan State University, where he assisted in the design, organization and execution of strength and conditioning programs for the Spartan men's and women's basketball, football, and ice hockey teams. He organized and administrated weight room operations, including scheduling, purchasing, and budgeting of needed equipment and supplements and also helped with the maintenance of the facility.

The Cleveland, Ohio, native was an assistant football coach at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, from August 2000 to January 2003. He coached defensive ends and oversaw the scout team defense, as well as coordinating pre-game and pre-practice warm-up and assisting in scouting opponents. Piraino completed an internship with the Cleveland Indians in which he assisted in the physical conditioning of the Tribe's major and minor league baseball players between July 2000 and January 2001.

Piraino earned a bachelor's degree in sport and exercise science from the University of Akron in 2002 and a master's degree in sport administration from Michigan State University in 2004.
