Owls look to further their quest for the 2010-11 Big 5 Title
Game Notes vs. Penn
PHILADELPHIA - Looking for its sixth-straight win and a 2-0 record in Big 5 play, the Temple women's basketball team travels to city rival Penn for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 22 at The Palestra. Live stats are available HERE, and a live webcast is available to subscribers HERE.
Temple (12-6, 4-0 A-10, 1-0 Big 5) is coming off its fifth straight win, a 53-43 defeat of Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. The Owls have played only one game in the Big 5 so far, and they are 1-0 with a 55-43 win at Villanova.
Junior Kristen McCarthy, the reigning Big 5 Player of the Week, reached the 1,000-point mark in her career in Temple's win earlier this week and she has now scored 1,010 career points to rank 17th all-time at Temple.
The Owls are undefeated in Atlantic 10 play at 4-0, and are averaging 25.8 points per game more than their conference opponents so far.
SCOUTING PENN
Penn snapped a three-game losing streak as well as a 24-game Big 5 losing streak with a 45-40 win against La Salle earlier this week, also marking the 400th win in program history for Penn. The Quakers are led by freshman guard Alyssa Baron with 15.6 points per game. Penn has out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 3.1 rebounds per game this season.
SERIES RECORD
Temple holds a 46-15 advantage in the all-time series against Penn. The Owls have won the last six straight contests as well as 13 of the last 15. Last year's meeting was a 55-31 win for Temple at home, and in 2008-09 the Owls earned an 81-70 win at Penn- the closest of the last six meetings. Penn's last win was on Dec. 9, 2003 by a score of 70-64, at Temple.
OWLS HOPE TO RECLAIM BIG 5 TITLE
After not winning or sharing the Big 5 title for the first time in six years in 2009-10, Temple is already looking good this season after avenging its only loss a year ago. The Owls are 1-0 in Big 5 play with their 55-43 win at Villanova on Dec. 19, and will face their second test at Penn.
SILENCING OF THE RAMS
In back-to-back battles of Owls vs. Rams last week, the outcome was no contest. Temple tied its season-high with 81 points while holding the Rhode Island Rams to just 34 points, tying the largest margin of victory (47 points) since 1984.
Going on the road to face the Fordham Rams, the Owls once again left no doubt, jumping out to a 15-0 lead and going on to a 71-28 win. Fordham's 28 points were the lowest for a Temple opponent since 1984.
RUNAWAY WIN
Temple's 47-point, 81-34 defeat of Rhode Island on Jan. 12 tied its largest margin of victory in the last 26 years of the program. Coincidentally, the last 47-point win also came against Rhode Island, 95-48 in 2008-09.
LOOKING FOR THREE GRAND
Two Owls have already reached 1,000 career points this season, and one more is close behind. Juniors Kristen McCarthy (1,010) and Shey Peddy (1,070) have both passed the milestone, while senior Qwedia Wallace has scored 965 points. McCarthy's 1,010 points rank 17th all-time at Temple, while Peddy scored the majority of her points over two years at D1 Wright State before transferring to Temple.
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 8th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 13.7 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so six times already this year, with a season-low of seven vs. #7 Ohio State.
