Owls look to improve on 2010 seventh-place finish

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Temple softball team has been picked to finish sixth in 2011 in the 11 team Atlantic 10 conference. The voting, conducted by the league's head coaches, was announced today by the league office. The Owls came one win short of making the playoffs last season, going 8-12 in A-10 play.

After winning its sixth straight Atlantic 10 championship and 22nd overall in 2010, Massachusetts has been selected to win the 2011 Atlantic 10 softball title.

Fordham, the 2010 regular season runner-up, is picked to finish second, followed by Charlotte, Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis.

Temple is picked to finish one spot higher than its 2010 seventh-place spot finish, followed by Rhode Island, Dayton, St. Bonaventure, La Salle and George Washington, respectively.

The Owls, under the direction of third-year head coach Joe DiPietro, look to improve on their 19-30 overall record from a year ago.

Senior Kristen Marris leads the team after a solid junior campaign, her first with the squad after transferring from New Mexico State. Marris was Temple's ace on the mound, posting a 2.65 ERA while striking out 141 batters and holding opponents to a .211 batting average. She is also the team's leading returner at the plate, hitting for a .290 clip.

The Cherry and White open the season on February 25 when they head to Tampa, Fla., for the competitive USF Fairfield Inn & Suites Tampa North Tournament. First pitch of the season is slated for 8:30 a.m. against Western Michigan, before the squad takes on Missouri, a top-10 team a year ago, at 10:30 a.m.

The six-team, double-elimination A-10 Championship will be held May 11-14 at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte's 49ers Softball Diamond in Charlotte, N.C.
