HANOVER, N.H. – The Temple women's tennis team got the 2011 season started this weekend, traveling to New Hampshire to take on Dartmouth on Saturday, January 22. The Owls dropped a 5-2 decision to the Big Green, ranked 61st in the nation.
Dartmouth got an early edge in doubles play with an 8-1 victory from Northeast regionally-ranked (6th) Molly Scott and Melissa Matsuoka over senior Theresa Stangl and freshman Jordan Batey at first doubles. At second doubles, seniors Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova dropped an 8-2 decision, giving the Big Green the doubles point. Temple's freshman duo Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms provided the Owls with their first win of the day by defeating Rachel Decker-Sadowski and Sarah Leonard, 8-6, at third doubles, although the point had already been secured.
In singles action, Dartmouth quickly built a 3-0 lead with wins at number one and two. Pazderova had a challenging match at first singles, facing Scott, the fourth-ranked regional player and 94th-ranked player in the country. Scott took the match 6-1, 6-1, before teammate Matsuoka got another point at second singles with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Stangl. At number five, Batey made an impressive debut, providing the Owls with their first point with a victory over Georgiana Smyser, 6-4, 6-4. Steiner, who was in action for the first time in nearly two years after a knee injury, was taken to three sets before beating Sabrina Stewart, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, for TU's only other point.
Temple is 0-1 and will face Southern New Hampshire at Dartmouth on Sunday, January 23 at 10 a.m.
