Junior Filip Rams to lead Owls
Philadelphia, Pa. – Temple junior Filip Rams has been named captain for the 2011 men's tennis season, head coach Steve Mauro has announced. Rams also served as captain of the squad in 2010.
“Filip, besides being a very talented player, is a great team captain,” commented Mauro. “His effort on and off the court is to be admired. I expect Filip again to be the most dominating player in the A-10. He is a pleasure to coach.”
Rams posted an 18-8 overall singles mark during the 2009-10 season, including a 13-6 record in dual matches, all at number one singles. The sophomore team captain led Temple to the semifinals of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship, racking up a trio of convincing straight-set wins over Saint Louis, Duquesne and George Washington. Paired with his brother Kacper for most of the season, Filip registered a 21-8 doubles record throughout the season, including a 14-6 mark in dual meet action. Playing every tandem match at number one as well, he teamed up with classmate Dmitry Vizhunov in his final six matches of the year, going 5-1, which included three victories at the A-10 Championship.
The Owls open the 2011 spring campaign this Saturday, January 29, with a 12 p.m. match against George Mason at the VCU Invite. The Cherry and White face league foe Richmond at 5 p.m. that same day, before taking on Longwood at 10 a.m. on January 30. The Owls are coming off a 10-12 season and a fourth place finish at the Atlantic 10 championship a year ago.
