Game Notes vs. Charlotte
PHILADELPHIA - The Atlantic 10 season will begin for Temple women's basketball on Friday, Jan. 7 in a 12:00 p.m. contest at Charlotte. The Owls (8-6) and the 49ers (12-3) were picked to finish third and fourth in the conference, respectively.
Live stats are available for the game HERE, and a live video stream can be seen by subscription HERE.
Temple recently snapped a two-game losing streak with a dominating 81-60 win vs. Akron on Jan. 2. Junior Satoria Bell led the Owls with a game and season-high 22 points. In the win, the Owls tallied 21 assists, the most in nearly two years. Temple also drained 10 three-pointers marking the fifth time this season the Owls have hit 10 or more treys in a game.
Senior Qwedia Wallace and junior Kristen McCarthy lead the team with 13.4 and 12.6 points per game, respectively. While Shey Peddy (11.5 ppg) recently reached the 1,000-point mark in her Division I career, both Wallace and McCarthy are nearing the milestone as well.
Wallace has scored 934 career points while McCarthy has scored 945.
Sophomore Natasha Thames leads Temple with 5.6 rebounds per game, but five other players are averaging between 3.9 and 4.6 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte started the season 3-2, but has since won nine of its last 10 games. The 49ers are coming off a 60-58 win vs. Virginia Tech. Charlotte leads the Atlantic 10 with 46.7 rebounds per game as a team and is second in steals (11.1 per game) as well as blocks (4.9 per game).
ALL-TIME SERIES
Temple holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series against Charlotte. The Owls lost the first meeting in 1998, but have gone 5-1 since 2006. Temple won 79-68 on its home court last year, thanks to a program-record 42 points from Kristen McCarthy. Two years ago the Owls got a 77-73 win in Charlotte but were later knocked out in the A-10 semifinals by the 49ers, who earned a convincing, 73-50 win.
ATLANTIC 10 OPENERS
Temple is 14-14 all-time in Atlantic 10 openers and has won five out of the last seven. The Owls lost last year's opener at #16 Xavier, 82-69.
BELL RINGS UP 22
Satoria Bell came off the bench in Temple's 81-60 win vs. Akron to lead the Owls with a game and season-high 22 points. She hit 6-of-11 from the field including 4-of-7 three's, and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Bell also led the team and recorded a season high with seven rebounds.
SUPERB SECOND HALF
The Owls scored a season-best 47 points in the second half against Akron, shooting 19-for-32 (59.4 percent) from the field.
FIRST BIG 5 TEST OF THE SEASON - PASSED
After not winning or sharing the Big 5 title for the first time in six years in 2009-10, Temple is already looking good this season after avenging its only loss a year ago. The Owls are now 1-0 in Big 5 play with their 55-43 win at Villanova on Dec. 19, while the Wildcats are now 1-2.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable of scoring from beyond the arc. Temple is averaging 7.1 three-pointers per game (3rd in the A-10) and shooting 35.5 percent from three-point land (4th in the A-10). The Owls sank 12 three's vs. #7 Ohio State, and made 10 on four other occasions (at #13/13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio and vs. Akron).
STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Trends are rare for the Owls this season as shooting percentage, rebounding and other factors have not necessarily led to wins and losses, but one sure thing is the success of Temple's starting lineup. When the Owls' starters outscore the opponents' starters, Temple is 7-0.
1,000 POINTS FOR PEDDY
Junior Shey Peddy, who played for two seasons at D1 Wright State, has now scored 1,015 points in her career. She scored 14 at Eastern Michigan to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
