PHILADELPHIA - The blocking power of Fordham proved to be the difference in a close, 3-1 loss for Temple volleyball on Saturday night at McGonigle Hall. The Rams (5-10, 2-1) had 21 team blocks to the Owls' 14, and defeated Temple (5-12, 1-3) by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-23. Gabriella Matautia and Collin Wallace led the Owls with 17 kills apiece.

Both Matautia and Wallace finished with double-doubles, recording 11 digs and 15 digs, respectively. Elyse Burkert tallied nine kills and 15 digs for the Owls, while Emily Frazer led the team in blocks with seven.

Lisa Hipp led Fordham with 13 kills, while Krissy Buongiorno and Randi Ewing led all players with 10 blocks each.

After hanging with the Rams until midway through the first set, Temple struggled with a string of errors and fell in a seven-point hole as Fordham took a 23-16 lead. The Owls battled in a big way, using a 7-0 run to come all the way back and tie the score at 23-23. Despite the comeback, the set ended in disappointing fashion for Temple after an error on the Owls was followed by a kill for the Rams.

The second set was tied at 11-11 before Fordham began to pull away. The Owls once again came close near the end and cut the deficit to 23-20, but could come no closer as the Rams went ahead 2-0 for the match.

Fordham had only five kills to go with 13 errors in the third set, as Temple took the lead and held it in a 25-18 win. Matautia had her best set of the match with six kills, while her and Wallace both tallied six digs in the set.

The fourth set was another intense battle with nine ties and four lead changes. The Owls once again battled after being down as many as five at 20-15, and tied the score at 21, 22 and 23 before a Fordham kill followed by a block ended the match in the Rams' favor.

Temple will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 6 in a 7:00 p.m. match at city rival La Salle.
