Temple Women's Tennis Fares Well at Day Two of SJU Invitational

Owls singles players all advance, both doubles teams win one
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team is competing at the SJU Invitational on Friday-Sunday, September 30-October 2, 2011. The Owls all received byes on day one, and then had great success on their first day of competition with all four singles players advancing in their brackets and both doubles teams moving on.
At the first flight, Yana Mavrina defeated Drexel's Zeynep Mafa in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1, and will face Samantha Carnell of Delaware in the quarterfinals. Paola Calderon followed suit at the second flight, winning a challenging 7-5, 7-5, decision over Kathleen Uy of Rhode Island in her first match. Calderon takes on Marcela Rosales from Drexel on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
At flight three, Rebecca Breland defeated Drexel's Sonja Stosic 6-2, 6-2, and will take on Delaware's Kim Milla in the quarters. Wrapping up singles play for the Owls, Maame Ama Osei handled Aysenil Orhon of Drexel, 6-1, 6-1, and faces Karolina Wojciak of Rhode Island on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Mavrina and Calderon teamed up to take on Nicole Pivonka and Emma Brook of Drexel in the first round, defeating the Dragons' duo 9-7. The team takes on Rhode Island's Kirsten Leikem and Tristany Leikem on Sunday.
Breland and Ose made quick work of Saint Joseph's Nicole Esposito and Kelly Mulquin, 8-3, in the opening round. The duo had their quest for the title thwarted in the next round by Drexel's Stosic and Alex Bell who came away with an 8-2 win.
Temple concludes play on Sunday, October 2.
