PHILADELPHIA - They kept it close but the Temple volleyball team ultimately lost in three sets to visiting George Washington on Friday night, by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-19. The Colonials (16-6, 5-3) were led by MacKenzie Knox with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .650, while Elyse Burkert led the Owls (6-15, 2-6) with 10 kills.

Chelsea Tupuola recorded a match-best 21 digs for Temple, and Collin Wallace tallied eight kills along with seven digs.

The Owls found themselves down as many as eight in the first set at 20-12, but they hung around with a four-point rally to make things closer before the Colonials pulled away again in the end.

Temple stayed one step ahead for much of a neck-and-neck second set, but after the fifth tie at 14-14, George Washington soon led by three points at 18-15. The Owls showed no quit, rallying for five straight points to take a 20-18 lead, and then led again by two at 22-20.

At that point the momentum shifted once again to the Colonials, who fought back to another tie at 22. Lauren Whyte knocked down two kills in the final four points and an error on the Owls finally ended the set in George Washington's favor, 25-23.

Burkert recorded six of her kills in the second set while Tupuola came up with seven digs.

It was George Washington who stayed a step ahead in the third set as Temple struggled with attack errors. With 13 kills for the Colonials compared to seven for Temple, GW took the momentum down the stretch to win the set and the match.
