Women's Tennis Still Competing at USTAITA Regional Championship

Four Temple players represent Owls

NORFOLK, Va. – The Temple women's tennis team was in action for the last time this fall at the USTAITA Women's Atlantic Regional Championship, being held at Old Dominion on October 21-25, 2011. The Owls sent four players to the competition: Jordan Batey, Alicia Doms, Paola Calderon and Yana Mavrina.

After winning her first two singles matches in the qualifying bracket, Batey took on Virginia's Maria Fuccillo in the main draw round of 64. The sophomore dropped a 6-0, 6-0, decision to the 14-seed to end her quest for a title.

Doms was also a two-time winner on Friday, moving in to the main draw against sixth-seeded Jeltje Loomans of William & Mary. Doms also fell in her match, dropping a 6-0, 6-2, decision.

Calderon was active in the qualifying consolation singles round, winning a 6-3, 6-2, match over Fernanda Perrotta of Penn State.

The final singles player for TU was Mavrina, who opened play in the main draw on Saturday. The sophomore dropped a tough three-set match to Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

In doubles action, Batey and Calderon went up against 12th-seeded Katie Kargl and Kayla Rizzolo of William & Mary. The duo nearly pulled off the upset, falling 9-7.
