PHILADELPHIA – After an early 15-0 run, the Temple women's basketball team never looked back in a 68-33 win over the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes (1-6). The Owls (4-5) were led by Brittany Lewis with 14 points and got 13 points apiece from Kristen McCarthy and Shey Peddy.
Victoria Macaulay came off the bench for six points and a game-high nine rebounds, and BJ Williams led all players in assists with eight and in steals with six.
Kent State scored the first bucket of the game, but over the Golden Flashes' next 19 possessions the Owls held them to one field goal and forced 10 turnovers in the 10-minute span.
Lewis scored six points as Temple used a 15-0 run to take a 15-2 lead less than four minutes into the game. The Owls stayed well ahead despite some shooting struggles, and the closest Kent State was able to get was nine. With a 19-10 lead and eight minutes remaining, the Owls closed out the half on a 13-2 run to take a 32-12 lead into the break.
Lewis led all players at the half with eight points while Joelle Connelly had the rebounding lead with seven as the Owls out-rebounded the Golden Flashes 32-16. Temple forced Kent State into 14 first-half turnovers while committing just four of its own.
The second half was largely a repeat of the first, but with stronger shooting by Temple at 53.3 percent. The Owls opened with a 23-6 run that included nine points from McCarthy, and led by their largest margin of 37, 55-18 with 11:14 remaining.
In its best rebounding performance of the season, Temple pulled down 52 boards and finished with a 25-6 edge on the offensive glass. The Owls scored 22 second-chance points to Kent State's five.
Temple now has a lengthy two-week break before its next game on Dec. 20, when the Owls take on UCLA in McGonigle Hall at 7:00 p.m.
