PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team dropped a tough decision to Atlantic 10 favorite Richmond, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in a match played at Penn's Levy Pavilion. The Owls fall to 2-3 for the season.
In doubles play, the senior duo of Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner got things started with an 8-2 victory over Helen Cunningham and Alexandra Smyth. The freshman duo of Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina secured the doubles point with an 8-1 win at third doubles, and seniors Christine Clermont and Theresa Stangl added an 8-3 win at the second flight to complete the sweep.
In singles action, Josephine Bergman lost in the sixth position to Elizabeth Sims, 6-0, 6-4, to give Richmond its first point. She was then followed by Pazderova, who lost in fifth singles, 6-4, 6-2. In the second position, Steiner dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision. With the score now 3-1 in Richmond's favor, Mavrina and Doms would tie the match at 3-3, picking up victories at the third and fourth spots, respectively. The deciding point came down to Stangl, who played a tough three setter but came up just short to lose 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
The Owls will continue play next weekend against Buffalo at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center on February 19 at 5 p.m.
