Owls look to stay unbeaten in the A-10 and record 14th straight win
Game Notes vs. Dayton
PHILADELPHIA - With at least a runner-up finish in the Atlantic 10 already locked up, the Temple women's basketball team (20-6, 11-0) is looking to further its quest to become number one as it faces Dayton (16-9, 7-4) at home on Saturday, Feb. 19. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Liacouras Center and will air live on CBS College Sports.
The Owls have won 13 straight, ranking as their longest win streak since 2004-05. Temple's win this past Wednesday (89-36 at George Washington) along with losses by Charlotte and Duquesne, guaranteed the Owls at least a second-place conference finish.
Xavier, ranked sixth in the nation, is tied with Temple for first place at 11-0. The two teams will meet in the final game of the regular season on Feb. 27, and if both are still undefeated the game will determine the conference's regular-season champ.
Temple has now reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth straight season thanks to a 53-point victory earlier this week at George Washington that ranked as the second-largest in the history of the program.
The Owls' top three scorers are about as balanced as it gets, with junior Shey Peddy at 13.5 ppg followed by junior Kristen McCarthy at 13.1 ppg and senior Qwedia Wallace at 12.8 ppg.
At 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the A-10, Dayton is currently tied for fourth in the standings. The Flyers are coming off a 72-53 loss at Charlotte last weekend and did not play on Wednesday this week. Junior Justine Raterman leads Dayton with 16 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game.
SERIES RECORD
Temple and Dayton are tied all-time at 10-10, but the Owls have dominated the series since 2003 with a record of 9-2. The Flyers won last year's regular season match-up in Dayton by a score of 71-63, but Temple got revenge in the A-10 Tournament semifinals with a 67-64 overtime win. The Owls' only other loss to Dayton since 2003 was on the road in 2008.
WALLACE NEARS 3-POINT RECORD
With 150 three-pointers, Qwedia Wallace is just four away from tying the all-time career record at Temple. Recent Big 5 Hall of Fame inductee Stacey Smalls currently holds the record with 154.
RECORD-SETTING WIN
Temple's most recent win, 89-36 at George Washington, was impressive from beginning to end. After going down 0-2 the Owls scored 28 unanswered points, eventually winning by 53 to record the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the program.
The Owls achieved a rare feat with six players scoring in double figures. They scored a season-high 52 points in the first half, tied their season high with 26 assists and tied their seaason low with seven turnovers all while winning their 13th straight game.
AP VOTES
For the third week in a row, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With 16 votes the Owls are ranked sixth of the 11 teams not in the top 25.
EIGHTH-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON
Temple has now reached 20 wins for the eighth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 years. The Owls started this year at 2-4 but have since gone 18-2. Last year's team tied for the second-most wins in program history with 25.
OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.
Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.
TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (45.7 ppg), scoring margin (25.5 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.327), 3-pt pct. defense (.230), blocks (5.3 pg), steals (11.2 pg) and turnover margin (+8.5).
Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (3.8 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is tied for #3 in blocks for league games (1.5 bpg).
OWLS CLINCH AT LEAST #2 SEED
With Temple's win earlier this week along with losses by Charlotte and Duquesne, the Owls have clinched at least the #2 seed in the upcoming A-10 Tournament due to head-to-head wins against both of those teams.
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 25 of Temple's 26 games, ranks first in the A-10 with 3.1 steals per game (3.8 in conference games). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high. Peddy also ranks 14th in NCAA Division I with her 3.1 spg. At 80 steals for the season, she already stands in seventh place on the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.
THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,205 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State.
Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,110 points to rank 15th all-time at Temple.
Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 16th with 1,080 points.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 6.9 three's per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 five other times (at #13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio, vs. Akron and at GW).
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 9th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 13.8 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so seven times already this year, with season-lows of seven vs. #7 Ohio State and recently at GW.
In a somewhat unusual statistical feat, Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in 107 consecutive games.
STEAMROLLING
Over Temple's 13-game win streak, just four have been by a margin of less than 10 points. Since their three-point win at Charlotte, the Owls have averaged 27.4 more points per game than their 10 A-10 opponents.
RPI REPORT
Temple is currently 43rd in the RPI standings of 343 teams. Other A-10 teams in the top 50 are Xavier (8), Charlotte (41), Duquesne (46) and Dayton (49).
