Owls have bevy of runners qualify for finals

KINGSTON, R.I.
- After one full day of competition, the Temple women's track & field team is in 10th place in the Atlantic 10 Championships in Kingston, R.I.  The Owls had multiple athletes qualify for tomorrow's final round of competition.

"We had a major goal to try to get a lot of people back in the finals and we accomplished that," said head coach Eric Mobley.  "I think the team performed well and they are very focused to come back and do it again tomorrow."

Senior Assata Cowart qualified for the 500m dash finals, running a preliminary time of 1:16.35.  A trio of Owls qualified for the 800m run finals.  Sophomore Tonney Smith turned in a time of 2:17.34, senior Shadaya Bennett ran 2:18.23 and classmate Tashima Stephens broke the tape in 2:17.44

Cowart and sophomore Jade Wilson will be running in the 55m hurdles finals tomorrow, qualifying with times of 8.40 and 8.47 respectively.  

Freshman Ambrosia Iwugo qualified for a pair of event finals on day two.  She turned in a 200m time of 25.48 to punch her ticket to the finals, then posting a time of 57.58 in the 400m.  Senior Paris Williams will be vying for the 400m title along with Iwugo, turning in a preliminary time of 57.63.

Junior Alanna Owens finished fourth in the weight throw for the Owls, while freshman Saudiah Lawrence took ninth in the long jump.

Day two action begins with the men's and women's high jump finals at 9:00 a.m.
