PHILADELPHIA - Two conference titles are on the line for the Temple women's basketball team this week. First up, the Owls will go for the Philadelphia Big 5 title on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. as they travel across town to Saint Joseph's. Both teams are 3-0 and either will claim the championship outright with a win.
Temple (21-6, 12-0) will also be looking for its 15th straight win, and 11th straight against the Hawks (17-9, 7-5). Temple already defeated Saint Joseph's earlier this season, 53-43 at the Liacouras Center. No matter the outcome of Wednesday's game, the Owls will face fellow unbeaten Atlantic 10 foe #6 Xavier on Sunday at home to decide the A-10 regular season champion.
Live stats for the game at Saint Joseph's are available HERE and a live webcast is available to subscribers HERE.
Temple is coming off a 76-52 win vs. Dayton on Feb. 19 which was its 14th in a row. The Owls have defeated their conference opponents by a average margin of 25.3 points. Last week, Temple defeated George Washington 89-36, with the 53-point margin ranking as the second-largest all-time in the program's history.
Senior Qwedia Wallace has hit 152 career three-pointers and is two away from tying the all-time career record at Temple (154 by recent Big 5 Hall of Fame inductee Stacey Smalls). Wallace is averaging 12.8 points per game as one of Temple's three scoring leaders along with juniors Shey Peddy (13.6 ppg) and Kristen McCarthy (12.9 ppg). All three have reached the 1,000-point milestone in their careers this season.
Saint Joseph's is riding a five-game win streak to get to 7-5 in the A-10 after starting 2-5. The Hawks got a big road win at Duquesne last week, 79-73, and returned home for a 77-60 A-10 and Big 5 win vs. La Salle. Junior guard Michelle Baker leads the team with 12.8 ppg.
SERIES RECORD
Temple and Saint Joseph's are meeting for the 70th time since the city rivals began playing each other in 1938. Although Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 39-31, the Owls have won 16 of the last 17 including the last 10 straight. The last few games have proven very competitive, including the meeting earlier this season which Temple won by a score of 53-43 at home. Last year the Owls won 58-55 in overtime at home and then got another narrow, 58-56 decision at Saint Joseph's.
OWLS LOOK TO RECLAIM BIG 5 TITLE
The outcome of Wednesday's game will determine the 2010-11 Big 5 champ, as both teams enter the game at 3-0. After not winning or sharing the title for the first time in six years in 2009-10, Temple is looking to get that honor back.
RECORD-SETTING WIN
Temple's 89-36 win at George Washington on Feb. 16 was impressive from beginning to end. After going down 0-2 the Owls scored 28 unanswered points, eventually winning by 53 to record the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the program.
The Owls achieved a rare feat with six players scoring in double figures. They scored a season-high 52 points in the first half, tied their season high with 26 assists and tied their seaason low with seven turnovers all while winning their 13th straight game.
AP VOTES
For the fourth week in a row, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With 19 votes the Owls are ranked seventh of the 12 teams not in the top 25.
OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.
Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.
TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (46.2 ppg), scoring margin (25.3 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.318), 3-pt pct. defense (.247), blocks (5.8 pg), steals (11.0 pg) and turnover margin (+7.8).
Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (3.6 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is tied for #2 in blocks for league games (1.7 bpg).
OWLS CLINCH AT LEAST #2 SEED
With Temple's win last week at GW along with losses by Charlotte and Duquesne, the Owls clinched at least the #2 seed in the upcoming A-10 Tournament due to head-to-head wins against both of those teams.
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 26 of Temple's 27 games, ranks second in the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game (3.6 in conference games). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high. Peddy also ranks 19th in NCAA Division I with her 3.0 spg. At 81 steals for the season, she already stands in seventh place on the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.
THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,222 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State.
Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,117 points to rank 15th all-time at Temple.
Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 16th with 1,092 points.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 6.9 three's per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 five other times (at #13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio, vs. Akron and at GW).
EIGHTH-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON
Temple has now reached 20 wins for the eighth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 years. The Owls started this year at 2-4 but have since gone 19-2. Last year's team tied for the second-most wins in program history with 25.
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 9th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 13.9 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so seven times already this year, with season-lows of seven vs. #7 Ohio State and recently at GW.
In a somewhat unusual statistical feat, Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in 108 consecutive games.
