Owls fall to Illinois State, 6-1; defeat host South Florida 8-2
Illinois State 6, Temple 1 (Box Score)
Temple 8, South Florida 2 (Box Score)
TAMPA, Fla. – The Temple softball team split its final two games of the USF Fairfield Inn and Suites Tampa North Tournament, dropping a 6-1 decision to #29 Illinois State on Saturday, February 26, before defeating South Florida, 8-2, on Sunday, February 27. The Owls end the season-opening tournament with a 3-2 record.
Due to delays in the original schedule, Temple's game against Illinois State, originally slated to begin at 8:30 p.m., did not actually get started until close to midnight. The late hour favored the Redbirds, who took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning and never looked back. Illinois State pitcher, Megan Warner, threw a one-hitter against TU, which had just exploded for a season-best 14 hits in a win over Central Connecticut earlier that day.
The Owls lone run came in the bottom of the second after junior Rachel Knable drew a two-out walk, advanced to third on an error by the pitcher, and scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Crystal Nyman took the loss for Temple. She pitched 7.0 innings, giving up 14 hits while striking out three.
In TU's final game of the tournament, the squad faced the host South Florida team. Temple scored four runs in the top of the second, and that would have been enough to secure the win, but the team tacked on two more in the top of the third and two in the sixth on the way to an 8-2 win.
Six different players collected hits for the Owls. Knable continued her solid weekend with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Freshman Brooklin White improved to 2-1 on the mound, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run.
Temple is 3-2 and will return to Florida for the challenging 2011 Citrus Classic in Orlando, where it will face #32 Illinois, #33 North Carolina, Illinois State for a second time, #15 Louisiana-Lafayette, and Maryland. The first game of the event for the Owls is March 4 against Illinois at 10 a.m.
