ORLANDO, Fla. – The Temple softball squad opened the 2011 Citrus Classic with a 12-0 six-inning loss to Big Ten power Illinois on Friday, March 4, 2011. The tournament is taking place at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
The Owls hung with the Fighting Illini, a team that started the 2011 season in the top-25, for the first three innings. But the 0-0 tie to start the fourth inning didn't last long. Illinois plated two runs in the frame after a one-out single was followed by a two-run homer.
That was apparently all the Illini needed to jumpstart its offense, and the team went on to scored four runs in the fifth and finish the game early with six more in the sixth.
The Cherry and White, on the other hand, had trouble getting the bats going and were held to just one hit through the first five innings. The Owls threatened to ruin the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when freshmen Sarah Prezioso and Stephanie Pasquale delivered back-to-back one-out singles, but Illinois relief pitcher Laura Tarnawa got out of the inning with a strikeout and pop out.
In addition to Prezioso and Pasquale, junior Meaghan Marley collected TU's other hit in the contest, a leadoff single in the bottom of the third.
Senior Kristen Marris was roughed up on the mound by the potent Illinois offense, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and allowing nine runs (six earned).
Temple is 3-3 and will be back in action later today against North Carolina at 3 p.m.
